Its elegant, pale cream to silvery-white body is decorated with distinctive orange spots and dashes, while beautiful iridescent blue markings across its face add a subtle splash of colour.

What makes this species particularly appealing is its remarkable sand-sifting behaviour. Throughout the day, the Diamond Goby scoops mouthfuls of sand, filtering out tiny invertebrates and other edible particles before releasing the cleaned substrate through its gills. This continuous activity helps turn over the upper sandbed, reducing the accumulation of loose surface debris and keeping the substrate looking freshly disturbed.

Native to tropical sandy lagoons and reef environments throughout the Indo-Pacific, the Diamond Goby spends much of its time close to the bottom, searching for food and maintaining its burrow beneath sheltered rockwork.

Generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish, it can become territorial towards other sand-sifting gobies. In the wild, this species commonly forms pairs, although a single individual can also be maintained successfully in a suitable aquarium.

The Diamond Goby is best suited to an established marine aquarium with a substantial area of fine sand, secure rockwork and sufficient natural feeding opportunities. Regular supplementary feeding is essential, as constant sand-sifting does not guarantee that the fish is receiving enough nutrition.

With its beautiful markings, curious behaviour and tireless sand-sifting activity, the Diamond Goby makes an engaging addition to a carefully maintained reef aquarium.
