Its warm tan to chocolate-brown body is complemented by beautifully contrasting yellow-orange edges along the dorsal and anal fins, a pale to bluish tail and subtle markings around its expressive eyes.

Unlike many larger tang species, the Tomini Tang remains relatively compact, making it a popular choice for suitably sized home reef aquariums. Its attractive colouration and graceful swimming movements become particularly noticeable as it moves between open water and established rockwork.

Native to the tropical western and central Pacific, this species naturally inhabits coral-rich reef slopes, where it spends much of its day grazing across rock and other hard surfaces. Its specialised bristle-like teeth are adapted for scraping fine algae, diatoms and associated organic material, providing a useful natural grazing function in mature marine aquariums.

Generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish, the Tomini Tang can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, especially those with a similar shape or feeding behaviour. It is best maintained individually in most home aquariums, with plenty of open swimming space and established rockwork.

With its beautiful fin colouration, constant activity and fascinating grazing habits, the Tomini Tang makes a rewarding centrepiece for a well-established reef aquarium.
