Why Feed Live Baby Brine Shrimp?
Freshly hatched baby brine shrimp are one of the most widely used live foods for rearing ornamental fish. Newly hatched Artemia nauplii are approximately 450 microns in size, making them small enough for many species of fry while still being large enough to trigger an active hunting response.
Their constant swimming movement encourages fish to pursue and capture their food, which can be particularly valuable for newly free-swimming fry, juvenile fish and reluctant feeders. Freshly hatched nauplii are rich in protein and still carry nutritional reserves from the cyst, making them especially valuable when harvested soon after hatching.

Note: Although freshly hatched Artemia are an excellent live food, they should form part of a varied feeding programme. For demanding marine larvae in particular, Artemia may require enrichment to provide adequate levels of certain essential fatty acids.
AHT Hatching Instructions
The following are the manufacturer's instructions reproduced as printed on the can:
- HATCHING CONTAINER: Preferably use a container with a conical bottom.
- AERATION: Add strong continuous aeration to the bottom of hatching container through airstones.
- EGG DENSITY: Use no more than 2 grams/liter.
- TEMPERATURE: Ideally between 25-30 °C.
- SALINITY: Preferably use 15 ppt. 10-40 ppt. is acceptable.
- ILLUMINATION: A strong fluorescent or incandescent light.
- pH: pH should be maintained > 8. If pH drops below 7.5, sodium bicarbonate should be added into the water to increase the pH to 8.
- HATCHING TIME: Brine shrimp nauplii should be harvested about 18-24 hours.
- COLLECTING NAUPLII: Stop aeration and cover the top of the hatching container from the light. Wait for 10-15 minutes. Most nauplii will sink to the conical bottom of the container while empty shells will float to the water surface during this period of time. Collect nauplii from the bottom drainage (if available) or through siphoning. Rinse well with minimum mechanical damage before feeding.
- STORAGE CONDITIONS: Opened and unopened cans should be stored in a cool dry location, preferably stored below 4°C.
