Bacopa caroliniana 'Colorata' - Immersed Potted Plant
Buy Now, Pay Later Available
Bacopa caroliniana 'Colorata', commonly known as Bacopa Colorata is a sturdy, slow-to-moderate growing stem plant famed for its peach-pink to copper tones under strong light and good nutrition. Retains the classic Bacopa thickness and neat, opposite leaves, but colours up more readily than the standard green form. Excellent as a calm, structured mid-/background accent.
Physical characteristics
-
Form: Upright stems with opposite, rounded to obovate leaves
-
Leaf size: Typically 1–3 cm long; fleshy texture
-
Colour: Mid-green in modest light; pink/orange/copper hues with stronger light, higher micronutrients and good CO₂
-
Height in aquaria: Usually 15–35+ cm; tips readily reach the surface in taller tanks
Aquarium requirements
Difficulty
-
Level: Easy–Moderate (easy to keep; a bit more care to achieve strong colour)
Lighting
-
Requirement: Medium light keeps it green and compact; medium–high is best for colour and tight internodes
-
Too little light → taller, greener, more widely spaced leaves
CO₂
-
Demand: Low–medium
-
Will grow without injection; CO₂ ~10–20 mg/L significantly improves colour, density and speed
Nutrients & substrate
-
Feeding: Good water-column uptake with beneficial root feeding
-
Substrate: Inert or active; thrives with nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs
-
Fertilisation: Complete NPK + traces recommended
-
Weak colour/pale tips → often iron/micros
-
Overall slow, yellowing growth → nitrogen
-
Pinholes → commonly potassium
-
Water parameters (guideline)
-
Temperature: 20–28 °C (tolerant 18–30 °C)
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
GH: 3–12 °dGH
-
KH: 1–8 °dKH
-
Flow: Gentle–moderate; leaves are sturdy but prefer calmer zones
Planting & spacing
-
Plant stems 3–5 cm apart so light reaches the lower nodes
-
Best as a mid- to background group or colour accent column; avoid shading shorter plants
Propagation
-
Cuttings: Trim 8–12 cm apical tops and replant the tops; discard or shorten leggy bases
-
Side shoots: Pinch and plant as new stems for quicker bushiness
Maintenance
-
Hedge trim: Shear the group to height, leaving 5–10 cm stumps; multiple shoots will sprout
-
Top-replant reset: Uproot, keep the best coloured tops, replant; removes woody, bare bases
-
Keep nutrients steady and avoid big light swings to preserve colour and prevent algae
Aquascaping use
-
Brings warm pink/copper notes without high difficulty
-
Great for Dutch-style streets, colour contrast bands, or as a calm block between fine, fast stems
-
Pairs well with green carpets (Helanthium, Glossostigma) and dark wood/stone
Companion compatibility
-
Community-safe with fish, shrimp and snails
-
Avoid large herbivores (goldfish, silver dollars) or rough diggers that uproot stems
Lifecycle & emersed form
-
Perennial; very easy emersed in humid conditions with thicker, greener leaves and small pale-blue flowers
-
Transitions back to submerged growth with a short adaptation period
Common issues & diagnostics
-
Leggy, bare bases: Insufficient light at the bottom → thin the group, increase light, or top-replant
-
Colour won’t develop: Light too low or micros/CO₂ limited → raise light moderately, ensure iron/micros and stable CO₂
-
Algae on upper leaves: Light–nutrient imbalance or fluctuating CO₂ → shorten photoperiod, improve dosing stability and flow
Special features / benefits
-
Reliable, tidy stem that adds colour without being fussy
-
Good nutrient sponge for newer tanks while remaining ornamental

Origin
Country or continent where a plant is the most common. Cultivars arise or are bred in cultivation.
Growth Rate
Growth rate of the plant compared to other aquatic plants.
Height
Average height (cm) of the plant after two months in the tank.
Light Demand
The average or medium light demand of an aquarium plant is 0.5 W/L.
CO2 Demand
A medium need in CO2 is 6-14 mg/L. A high demand in CO2 is approx. 15-25 mg/L.
