Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
Paracheilinus carpenteri
The Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse is one of the most captivating members of the flasher wrasse family, admired for its vibrant colouration, elegant fins and spectacular display behaviour. Its slender body features beautiful shades of orange, red and yellow, accented by delicate electric-blue stripes that shimmer as the fish moves through the aquarium.
Mature males are particularly impressive, developing elongated dorsal fin filaments and more elaborate fin markings. During courtship, males can intensify their colours dramatically, spreading their fins and performing rapid, graceful swimming displays to attract females. These remarkable performances give flasher wrasses their distinctive common name.
Native to tropical reefs of the western Pacific, this species naturally inhabits reef slopes and areas above established coral formations, where it feeds on tiny planktonic organisms carried through the water column. Its active swimming behaviour creates constant movement, while its naturally peaceful temperament makes it an appealing addition to carefully selected reef communities.
Unlike many sand-burying wrasses, the Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse seeks shelter within rockwork, retreating into narrow crevices when frightened or resting overnight. A secure environment with plenty of hiding places allows it to settle and display its natural behaviour.
Although it can be kept individually, this species also displays fascinating social interactions in appropriately sized groups consisting of one male and several females. These interactions may encourage more frequent and colourful male displays.
With its exquisite markings, graceful movements and exceptional reef compatibility, the Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse is a wonderful choice for marine aquarists looking to introduce brilliant colour and natural activity to their aquarium.
Important: Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers. A secure, tight-fitting aquarium lid is essential.
Feeding Notes
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses are planktivores that naturally feed on small zooplankton and other tiny organisms suspended in the water column.
Provide a varied, protein-rich diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood and other appropriately sized meaty foods. High-quality marine pellets and flakes may also be accepted once the fish has settled into aquarium life.
Feed small portions two to three times daily where practical. As active swimmers with relatively small mouths, these wrasses benefit from frequent, appropriately sized meals rather than occasional large feedings.
Newly introduced individuals may initially be shy or reluctant to compete for food. Offer small frozen foods near their preferred swimming areas and ensure they are not being outcompeted by larger or more aggressive tankmates.
A varied diet is important for maintaining healthy body condition, supporting normal activity and encouraging the vivid colouration associated with mature male displays.
Aquarium Setup Notes
Provide a mature, stable marine aquarium of at least 230 litres, preferably with a minimum length of 90 cm, and a combination of established rockwork, sheltered crevices and generous open swimming space.
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses naturally inhabit reef slopes, spending much of their time swimming above coral formations and feeding on zooplankton carried through the water column.
Arrange the aquascape to provide open areas for swimming and displaying, together with numerous secure retreats where the fish can quickly hide when startled. Narrow rock crevices are particularly important, as flasher wrasses typically shelter within rockwork rather than burying themselves in sand to sleep.
Moderate, varied water movement is suitable, with sheltered areas away from continuous, powerful direct currents. Good oxygenation and stable water quality are essential.
Lighting can follow the requirements of the aquarium's other inhabitants, provided shaded areas are available. A consistent day-night lighting schedule allows the fish to establish normal feeding, resting and display behaviour.
A secure, gap-free aquarium lid or mesh cover is essential. Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers, particularly when startled or chased. Carefully check openings around cables, equipment, overflow systems and feeding access points.
When keeping a group, provide a larger aquarium with additional swimming space and hiding places to accommodate natural social interactions and courtship displays.
Compatibility Notes
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses are peaceful, active marine fish well suited to carefully selected community reef aquariums. Compatible tankmates may include peaceful clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, blennies and other non-aggressive marine species.
Avoid aggressive dottybacks, territorial damselfish, highly assertive wrasses and larger fish that may intimidate or repeatedly chase them. Persistent harassment can cause these relatively shy wrasses to hide, stop feeding or attempt to jump from the aquarium.
Can be kept singly or in a carefully selected group. In sufficiently spacious aquariums, a group consisting of one male and two or more females can encourage natural social interactions and the spectacular colour displays for which flasher wrasses are famous.
Avoid keeping multiple established males together in smaller aquariums, as competition and aggression may develop. Group composition, available swimming space and individual compatibility are important considerations.
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses can sometimes coexist with other peaceful flasher or fairy wrasses, but introductions should be planned carefully, particularly where similar-looking males may compete.
Reef safe: Carpenter's Flasher Wrasses do not normally nip or damage corals and are generally compatible with soft corals, LPS corals, SPS corals, anemones, clams and ornamental reef invertebrates.
Their natural diet consists mainly of small planktonic organisms rather than corals or established ornamental crustaceans.
With peaceful tankmates, frequent feeding, adequate swimming space and a completely secure aquarium lid, the Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse can become a colourful and fascinating resident of an established reef aquarium.
