Description

Cryptocoryne balansae
Common Name: Balansae Crypt

Cryptocoryne balansae is a stunning and adaptable plant traditionally known for its use in aquariums, but it also performs beautifully in paludarium and riparium setups, especially when grown emersed. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam, this species features long, narrow, crinkled green leaves that can reach over 40 cm in length. Its dramatic foliage makes it an excellent choice as a background or focal plant in larger terrariums or semi-aquatic layouts.

When grown emersed, Cryptocoryne balansae prefers a moist, humid environment and will develop sturdier, textured leaves. With time and the right conditions, it may produce small inflorescences, adding to its botanical charm. It thrives in nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to neutral substrate, and appreciates stable moisture and gentle lighting.

  1. Special Features:

    • Long, crinkled leaves with elegant arching form

    • Adaptable between submerged and emersed conditions

  2. Companion Compatibility:

    • Works well with mosses, ferns, and tropical aroids

    • Safe with frogs and reptiles in paludarium environments

  3. Lifecycle:

    • Perennial

  4. Dormancy Needs:

    • May undergo brief die-back period during transition but does not require dormancy

  5. CO2 Demand:

    • Low in emersed growth; optional in submerged setups

  6. Animal Compatibility:

    • Safe for use with amphibians, reptiles, and insects

Planting Instructions

  • Use a deep container or rear area of a paludarium for planting.

  • Plant the rootstock shallowly in a rich, moist substrate.

  • Allow space for its long leaves to arch or drape naturally.

  • Can be partially submerged or grown in very moist soil with high ambient humidity.

Care Instructions

  • Watering: Keep substrate moist at all times; never let it dry out completely.

  • Light: Bright indirect light is ideal; can adapt to low light with slower growth.

  • Humidity: Maintain high humidity (70–90%) using misting or enclosed setups.

  • Feeding: Occasional root tabs or liquid feeding (diluted) near the roots helps boost growth.

  • Pruning: Remove old or damaged leaves at the base to stimulate new growth.

  • Transition Note: May melt or slow down when moving from submerged to emersed; regrowth will follow if conditions are stable.
