Description

Cryptocoryne crispatula
Common Name: Crispatula Crypt

Cryptocoryne crispatula is a graceful and striking aquatic plant recognised for its long, ribbon-like leaves with gently undulating edges. Native to Southeast Asia, it is most often found in slow-moving rivers and streams, where it forms dense, flowing underwater meadows. Its vibrant green foliage and elegant leaf structure make it a favourite among aquascapers seeking a natural, riverbank-inspired look.

When grown submerged in an aquarium, C. crispatula produces narrow, elongated leaves that can reach impressive lengths, creating a lush background or flowing midground accent in larger tanks. In paludariums or terrariums with a water feature, it thrives emersed, where leaves may be shorter and sturdier. Like other crypts, it adapts well to different conditions but appreciates stable water parameters and a nutrient-rich substrate for optimal growth.

Planting Instructions

  • Plant directly into a nutrient-rich substrate; do not bury the crown.

  • Best positioned as a background or tall midground plant in aquariums.

  • Avoid frequent uprooting to prevent “crypt melt.”

Care Instructions

  • Watering (Terrarium/Paludarium): Keep roots moist; maintain high humidity for emersed growth.

  • Light: Low to medium; too intense light may cause algae on leaves.

  • Humidity: 60–90% for emersed growth.

  • Feeding: Root tabs or enriched substrate recommended for best results.

  • Maintenance: Remove damaged leaves and allow the plant to spread naturally.
