Description

Hygrophila difformis also know as 'Water Wisteria' is a fast-growing, fern-like stem plant with deeply divided leaves that create a soft, lacy texture. Very forgiving and excellent for beginners, it rapidly absorbs excess nutrients and helps stabilise new aquaria.

Origin

  • Region: South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan)

  • Habitat: Floodplains, ditches and slow streams; often emergent seasonally

Physical characteristics

  • Form: Upright stems with opposite nodes; readily branches after trimming

  • Leaves: Finely dissected, “wisteria-like” when submerged; broader and less divided when emersed

  • Colour: Light to mid green; tips can appear brighter under stronger light

  • Height in aquaria: Typically 20–45+ cm; spreads laterally via low runners/shoots when encouraged

Aquarium requirements

Difficulty

  • Level: Easy

Lighting

  • Requirement: Low–medium light grows it well; medium–high yields denser foliage and shorter internodes

  • Very low light can cause leggy growth and sparse leaves

CO₂

  • Demand: Low (optional)

  • CO₂ at ~10–15 mg/L improves density and speed but isn’t required

Nutrients & substrate

  • Feeding: Strong water-column feeder with useful root uptake

  • Substrate: Inert or active; thrives with regular water-column fertiliser and/or root tabs

  • Fertilisation cues:

    • Pale new leaves → often iron/micros

    • Pinholes/edge wear → often potassium

    • Overall yellowing/slow growth → nitrogen

Water parameters (guideline)

  • Temperature: 20–28 °C (tolerant 18–30 °C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • GH: 3–12 °dGH

  • KH: 1–8 °dKH

  • Flow: Gentle to moderate

Planting & spacing

  • Plant stems 3–5 cm apart so light reaches the lower nodes

  • Mid- to background placement; allow room for the bush to widen

  • Can be “pinned” low: plant tops horizontally to encourage lateral, hedge-like growth

Propagation

  • Cuttings: Trim 8–12 cm apical tops and replant the tops; remove leafless bases

  • Side shoots: Pinch and replant for quick bushiness

  • May produce short runners near the substrate in strong light

Maintenance

  • Hedge trim: Shear the group to height, leaving 5–10 cm stumps; multiple shoots emerge

  • Top-replant reset: Uproot, keep the best tops, replant; discarding woody bases keeps the stand fresh

  • Regular water changes and steady fertiliser prevent algae on the fine leaves

Aquascaping use

  • Adds soft, feathery movement and fills space quickly

  • Great background mass in nature/Dutch layouts; contrasts well with broad-leaf crypts, swords and hardscape

  • Excellent nutrient sponge for new tanks or after disturbances

Companion compatibility

  • Community-safe; provides shelter for fry and shrimp

  • Avoid large herbivores (goldfish, silver dollars) and heavy diggers that may uproot stems

Lifecycle & emersed form

  • Perennial; emersed leaves are broader and less dissected

  • Transitions between emersed and submerged forms with a short adaptation (old leaves may shed; new submerged growth follows)

Common issues & diagnostics

  • Leggy, bare bases: Insufficient light at the bottom → thin/space stems, increase light, or top-replant

  • Melting after purchase: Emersed-to-submerged transition → trim damaged leaves; new submerged shoots will replace them

  • Algae on fronds: Light–nutrient imbalance or inconsistent maintenance → shorten photoperiod, keep nutrients steady, improve flow

Special features / benefits

  • Rapid growth outcompetes algae and buffers nutrient swings

  • Very beginner-friendly yet attractive in advanced aquascapes

Growth Rate
Growth rate of the plant compared to other aquatic plants.

Height
Average height (cm) of the plant after two months in the tank.

Light Demand
The average or medium light demand of an aquarium plant is 0.5 W/L.
