Description

Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, commonly known as Brazilian Micro Sword or Brazilian Grass, is a popular aquatic plant used to create lush, grass-like carpets in freshwater aquariums. This plant belongs to the Apiaceae family and is known for its fine, blade-like leaves that resemble a miniature lawn. Its compact growth and vibrant green colour make it a favourite for aquascaping enthusiasts, especially in foreground areas.

Physical Characteristics:

  1. Leaf Structure: The leaves of Lilaeopsis brasiliensis are thin, grass-like blades, usually 2-5 cm in length, depending on growing conditions. The leaves grow upright in compact tufts, giving the plant a dense, grassy appearance.

  2. Growth Form: Lilaeopsis brasiliensis grows horizontally by sending out runners, which develop new shoots and roots. Over time, it forms a dense carpet that covers the substrate.

  3. Root System: The plant has a fine root system that anchors it to the substrate and allows for effective nutrient absorption.

Aquarium Requirements:

  1. Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is essential for Lilaeopsis brasiliensis to thrive and maintain its compact, grass-like growth. Under low light, it may grow taller and lose its characteristic dense appearance.

  2. Substrate: A nutrient-rich substrate is ideal for Lilaeopsis brasiliensis. Aquasoil or fine-grain substrates work best, as they allow the plant’s fine roots to establish easily and support its growth.

  3. CO2 and Fertilisation: CO2 supplementation is recommended for optimal growth and maintaining a low, carpet-like form. Regular fertilisation with liquid or root-based nutrients ensures the plant receives essential macro and micronutrients for healthy development.

  4. Water Parameters: Lilaeopsis brasiliensis prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. The ideal temperature range is between 22°C and 28°C. It can tolerate soft to moderately hard water conditions.

Propagation: Propagation is simple as Lilaeopsis brasiliensis naturally spreads through runners. To propagate manually, cut sections of the runners with healthy shoots and replant them in the desired area. The plant will quickly establish and spread to form a new carpet.

Maintenance: To keep Lilaeopsis brasiliensis looking its best, regular trimming is necessary to maintain its compact growth and prevent it from growing too tall. Trimming also helps improve light penetration to the lower parts of the plant and encourages new growth. Removing dead or yellowing leaves helps maintain a clean and healthy aquarium.

Aquascaping Use: Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is a versatile plant, often used as a foreground carpet in aquascapes. Its grass-like texture adds a natural, meadow-like appearance to the aquarium. It pairs beautifully with taller plants and hardscape elements like rocks and driftwood, creating contrast and depth in the layout. It is especially popular in Iwagumi and nature-style aquascapes.

Challenges: Although hardy, Lilaeopsis brasiliensis requires consistent lighting, CO2, and nutrient levels to maintain its compact form and prevent it from becoming leggy. Without proper care, algae can accumulate on the leaves, especially in tanks with imbalanced water conditions.

Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is an elegant and easy-to-maintain aquatic plant that enhances the beauty of freshwater aquariums with its vibrant green, grass-like carpets. Its ability to create natural-looking foregrounds makes it a must-have for aquascaping enthusiasts. With proper lighting, CO2, and regular care, this plant will thrive and transform your aquarium into a lush underwater landscape.
