Description

Lindernia rotundifolia is a delicate but easy-going stem plant with small, rounded leaves and a tidy upright habit. It forms compact groups quickly, works well as a neat midground feature or light background plant, and is a strong choice for adding fine detail without looking too soft or overgrown. It is also considered a good starter plant because it adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions.

Origin

  • Region: Asia
  • Natural habitat: Stream margins and damp banks, with forms also grown emersed in cultivation.

Physical characteristics

  • Growth form: Upright stem plant with closely spaced leaves from top to bottom when grown well.
  • Leaf shape: Small, rounded to oval leaves arranged opposite along the stem. This round-leaf look is one of its defining features in the aquarium.
  • Colour: Bright to medium green.
  • Height in aquaria: Usually best treated as a midground to background stem, depending on trimming style and tank scale.

Aquarium requirements

Difficulty

  • Level: Easy
It is widely described as undemanding and suitable for beginners.

Lighting

  • Requirement: Low to medium, with moderate light giving a tidier, more compact result. In lower light it still grows, but usually more slowly and less densely.

CO₂

  • Demand: Low, though added CO₂ improves growth rate and overall density.

Nutrients & substrate

  • Substrate: Can be grown in standard aquarium substrate; nutrient-rich substrate helps stronger growth.
  • Fertilisation: Benefits from regular nutrients in the water column, and responds well when micronutrients and CO₂ are available.
  • Feeding style: Best treated primarily as a water-column feeding stem plant, with improved performance in richer substrate. This is an inference from its growth style and the care guidance available.

Water parameters (guideline)

  • Temperature: About 22–28 °C is a good working range, though related trade references indicate the species tolerates cooler and warmer conditions as well.
  • pH: Around 6.0–7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is suitable.
  • Flow: Gentle to moderate is ideal. This is practical aquarium guidance based on its fine stem structure.

Planting & spacing

  • Plant stems individually or in small groups with a little spacing so light can reach the lower leaves.
  • Best used in the midground, though it can also work in the background of smaller aquariums or as a solitary accent.
  • It looks best when planted as a small group of uneven-height stems rather than a single isolated bunch. This is an aquascaping inference from its compact grouping habit.

Propagation

  • Propagates very easily from stem cuttings.
  • Trim healthy tops and replant them into the substrate. Regular cutting encourages branching and a fuller group.

Maintenance

  • This is a fairly fast-growing plant, so regular pruning is usually needed to prevent overgrowth.
  • Replanting trimmed tops helps keep the group compact and fresh.
  • If allowed to grow unchecked, it can become taller and take up more space than intended.

Aquascaping use

  • Very useful as a midground stem with a clean, rounded-leaf texture.
  • Creates a nice contrast with finer stems, grassy plants and red species. One trade reference specifically notes it pairs well visually with red plants.
  • Suitable for both larger planted tanks and smaller aquascapes where a neat, manageable green stem is needed. This is an inference from its leaf size and growth habit.

Lifecycle & emersed form

  • Can be grown both submerged and emersed, and may even flower when grown emersed.
  • Emersed-grown plants may need a short transition period after planting underwater, as is common with commercial stem plants. This is a practical cultivation inference.

Common issues & diagnostics

  • Leggy growth: Usually caused by lower light or insufficient trimming.
  • Overgrowth: A common issue simply because it grows readily and can fill space faster than expected.
  • Weak density at the base: Often improves by trimming and replanting tops more regularly. This is an aquascaping inference from its stem growth habit and pruning response.

Special features / benefits

  • Easy, adaptable and suitable for low-tech setups.
  • Forms compact green groups quickly and is simple to shape with trimming.
  • A very practical choice when you want a tidy rounded-leaf stem that is easier to manage than many larger background species. This is an inference based on its reported habit and use.
