ROOTED IN CHARACTER

ORIGIN Stump Wood combines substantial trunk forms with exposed root structures and an unmistakable tree-stump character. Each piece creates instant height, depth and presence, making it ideal for dramatic aquarium, paludarium and terrarium hardscapes.

Description

ORIGIN Stump Wood brings the structure of an exposed tree base directly into the hardscape.

Characterised by substantial upright trunks, broad root flares and irregular root systems, ORGIN creates a strong sense of age and permanence within an aquarium or terrarium. Unlike fine, highly branched woods, its visual strength comes from mass, vertical structure and the relationship between trunk and roots.

Each piece is naturally individual. Some feature a compact stump with widely spreading roots, while larger specimens can develop into complex structures with multiple trunks, intertwined root sections and dramatic projections extending in several directions.

The pale beige-to-warm tan colouring keeps even substantial pieces visually lighter than many darker driftwoods. Natural knots, grain variation, cavities, scars, broken branch ends and occasional darker sections remain visible, giving every piece an authentic, weathered appearance.

ORIGIN is particularly effective where the hardscape needs a strong central anchor. Upright trunks can create height and lead the eye through the composition, while exposed roots can be partially buried into substrate, positioned around stone or allowed to remain visible to create the impression of an eroded riverbank, flooded forest or exposed root system.

Its solid structural areas also provide excellent surfaces for attaching mosses and epiphytic plants such as Anubias and aquarium ferns. Over time, planting can soften the heavier stump forms while retaining the underlying architecture of the wood.

Multiple pieces can also be combined to construct larger root systems, forest bases or complex hardscape structures for larger aquariums.

Suitable for freshwater aquascaping, paludarium and terrarium applications.

What Makes ORIGIN Distinctive

  • Strong stump architecture — substantial trunk sections combined with exposed root forms.
  • Natural vertical structure — ideal for creating height and a defined focal point.
  • Broad root systems — roots can spread across the substrate, wrap around stone or disappear naturally into planting.
  • Pale natural colouring — beige, sand and warm tan tones keep larger pieces visually balanced.
  • Excellent planting surfaces — suitable for mosses and epiphytic plants.
  • Highly individual forms — every piece varies in trunk shape, root spread, texture and proportions.
  • Available in multiple sizes — from compact stump forms through to substantial statement pieces.

ORIGIN Stump Wood is graded according to overall dimensions and visual mass. Because this is a completely natural product, shape, root spread, trunk height and proportions will vary significantly between individual pieces within the same size category.

Product photographs for standard sizes should therefore be treated as representative examples rather than the exact piece supplied.

Selected exceptional pieces may also be offered separately as WYSIWYG — What You See Is What You Get, where the photographed piece is the exact specimen supplied.

Before Use

Rinse ORIGIN Stump Wood thoroughly with clean water and gently brush away any loose dust or debris before placing it in an aquarium. Do not use detergents, household cleaners, bleach or other chemicals.

Natural wood may initially float and can take time to become fully waterlogged. Soaking before installation is recommended. Larger pieces may need to be temporarily weighted or securely incorporated into the hardscape until they remain submerged naturally.

Some tannin release is normal and may temporarily tint the water amber. The amount varies between individual pieces and generally reduces over time with soaking and regular water changes.

A white or translucent biofilm may also develop during the first weeks after submersion. This is a common occurrence with new natural wood and usually disappears naturally or can be removed during routine maintenance.

Boiling is not recommended. Prolonged exposure to boiling water can alter and weaken the cellular structure of natural wood, particularly around thinner roots, cracks and naturally weathered areas. High heat and rapid moisture changes may also increase the risk of splitting, softening and premature structural deterioration. Gentle soaking in clean water is the preferred preparation method.

Inspect all natural projections, broken ends and finer roots when positioning the wood and consider the size and behaviour of the livestock that will inhabit the aquarium.
