Microsorum pteropus 'Windeløv' is a patented variety of Microsorum pteropus, named after Tropica's founder Holger Windeløv. Its finely branched leaf tips make it one of the most beautiful aquarium plants. Native to Southeast Asia, it thrives in a wide range of conditions, making it ideal for beginners and experts alike.
Physical Characteristics:
Leaf Shape & Size: Broad leaves with delicately branched leaf tip which can reach up to 15-20 cm tall. The foliage grows in dense tufts from a creeping rhizome and may develop subtle waves or twists as it matures.
Colour: Rich green, sometimes slightly darker than standard Java Fern, and can become more vibrant under moderate to high light.
Aquarium Requirements:
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is sufficient. Brighter lighting can intensify leaf colour, but is not essential for healthy growth.
CO₂: Not required, but supplemental CO₂ can enhance growth rate and overall vitality.
Temperature: 20–28 °C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Planting Instructions:
Do not bury the rhizome in substrate. Instead, attach the plant to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using thread, fishing line, or plant glue. Over time, the roots will naturally cling to the surface. If the rhizome is buried, it may rot.
Care & Maintenance:
Very low maintenance.
Grows slowly but steadily.
Trim damaged or older leaves at the base of the rhizome to encourage fresh growth.
Tolerates a wide range of conditions, including low-tech tanks and lower light setups.
Propagation:
‘Windeløv’ Java Fern propagates through adventitious plantlets that form on older leaves. These tiny new plants can be removed and reattached to hardscape once they develop roots. Alternatively, the rhizome can be gently cut and divided into smaller sections.
Aquascaping Use:
Ideal for midground or background in smaller tanks, or foreground accents in larger layouts. Its finely branched leaf tips help add texture and contrast most other broader leafed plants and adds vertical structure without blocking light. Perfect for nature-style, jungle, and low-maintenance aquascapes.
Key Benefits:
Completely snail-proof and not typically grazed by herbivorous fish.
Excellent for low-tech tanks.
Absorbs nutrients from the water column, helping improve water quality.
‘Windeløv’ Java Fern is a graceful, reliable, and visually appealing plant that brings elegance and structure to any freshwater aquarium. Its minimal care requirements, versatility in placement, and resistance to algae and pests make it a must-have for aquarists seeking beauty without the hassle.
