Description
ZOOLEK Aqua Test NH3 is used for measurement of ammonium compounds – ammonia and ammonium cations (NH3/NH4+) in the range of 0-10 mg/l. Aquatest NH3used in conjunction with Aquatest pH enables to determine the content of free toxic ammonia in aquarium water. A simple measurement method involves adding a suitable quantity of drops of each indicator to the water sample, letting stand the solution for 5 minutes, and then matching the obtained colour with a corresponding colour scale to read the result.

Why measure ammonia content?
Ammonium compounds are the first products in the nitrogen cycle. At a pH of 7 ammonium ions NH4+ are present in water in the form that is not very harmful to living beings. Increase of a pH above 7 contributes to the elevated percentage content of free toxic nitrogen. The concentration of ammonia above 0.1 mg/l is harmful for fry, in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 mg/l presents a risk for the health of more sensitive fish while at a value of 1.0 mg/l can be life-threatening for adult fish. Although, the total amount of ammonium compounds of 1 mg/l and at a pH of water of 9.0 is harmful, a concentration of 10 mg/l at a pH of 7.0 does not pose the danger to fish life.

How to prevent ammonia contamination?
In case of exceeding the maximum level of ammonia content pH value should be lowered up to 7, then a partial or total water change in an aquarium is necessary depending on the concentration of ammonium compounds. It is also advised to apply an effective aeration as well as proper filter media.
